The government of Nepal has lifted the ban on Tiktok.
Government Spokesperson and Communications Minister Prithvisubba Gurung informed that the decision was taken at the meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Thursday.
Gurung said that the ban was lifted because Tiktok agreed to be registered according to the social media operating guidelines.
Among those conditions, he should appoint an official to regulate the language used in Tik Tok, support Nepal's tourism and digital education and security, among others.
He said that even though Tiktok representatives agreed to it in an informal conversation, a formal agreement is yet to be reached.
Gurung informed that now other social networks like Tiktok should also be registered in Nepal and they should also comply with the above mentioned conditions.
According to the information given by the officials of the Ministry of Communication, the Ministry decided to remove the ban on Tiktok with some conditions and sent it to the Cabinet on Wednesday.
The government had banned the app in Nepal in the second week of November last year saying it had "played a role in disrupting social harmony and environment".
Although the Nepal government has banned it, many users are using VPN to run Tik Tok.
The ban was already in effect before it was lifted
Before the government lifted the ban on Tiktok on Thursday evening, users said that Tiktok had started running on the networks of some Internet Service Providers (ISPs). The BBC also found that Tik Tok was running uninterrupted on some ISP's internet.
Officials had earlier confirmed that government agencies are discussing lifting the ban on TikTok. Some ministers and senior officials who spoke to the BBC two days ago also said that "discussions are underway to open Tiktok with conditions".
Mallika Karki of Handigaon, Kathmandu was running Tiktok using VPN earlier. But since Thursday, he has not had to use VPN.
"I heard that Tiktok has opened. Now it is running when I tried it," she said on Thursday afternoon.
